The Hood-class of battlecruiser is a venture that embodies the apex of Sarian design and fabrication skill. Started a few months after Imperial withdrawal from the system in 0 BBY and completed under Admiral Roj's prompting in 4 ABY, this class of warship was the flagship and champion of Caspia until more substantial ship construction projects were undertaken.
Mere weeks after the final Imperial ship departed Caspian space, initiatives were underway to develop larger, more modern, and more capable starships. During the waning years of Imperial occupation, crime, corruption, piracy and general interference with commerce increased with alarming frequency in stark contrast to remarkable sluggishness in response by the Imperial garrison.
The entire endeavour was bogged down by complications and construction challenges and lacked proper direction until the coming of the Barren Sector Fleet. With encouragement from Roj himself – who saw this as a way that Caspians, Sarians, and his own people could relate to and collaborate on – the cruiser was completed and outfitted in short order. Unfortunately, Roj would not last to see it, but the ship nonetheless represents a significant step forward in starship design.
Much of Hood's armament was not determined or installed until the final stages of construction. Indeed, the arrangement the class was initially slated to receive was nothing noteworthy and brought up questions of effectiveness. Caspia, in the midst of questioning its own existence and direction, doubted it would be able to obtain substantial quantities or qualities of capital-ship-scale weaponry. A trio of Caspian engineers (a Human, a Sarian, and a Givin) stepped forward to design and develop a model of turbolaser styled after those that had been left behind by the Imperial occupation, utilizing pianetic materials and gas harvested from the relatively miniscule, but promising, threads of gas harvested by the prospecting rig orbiting Kichnar. Their design was called the sarslaugn ("star spear"), and while it looked promising in holographic projections and simulations, it never achieved success when constructed. Pianetic metals, for one, were not easy to work with and possessed challenging traits that would not be deciphered until the establishment of CDMC. To give them time, ship builders left adequate space and mount positions for the weapons in Hood's layout.
When Roj's Fleet arrived, the engineer team still had not achieved a stable, working turbolaser.
