Evolved from the languages of the Core Worlds, Galactic Basic, also called Galactic Basic Standard, has become the common language of the Core as well as nearly every human-dominated planet. It initially came into use as a language of commerce and trade in the early stages of the Old Republic and has spread along with the human population.

Its origins must have been the vernacular speech of humans and is partially derived from several ancient human languages like Olys Corellisi. Humans being the dominant species of the Galaxy, Basic has been adopted by many alien species as well, and dialectical versions can be found particularly among non-humans on human-dominated worlds.
