A member of the Bothan Spynet briefs Alliance personnel on the inner workings of an Imperial Star Destroyer

As an extension of the Bothan Way, the Bothan Spynet was developed circa 300 BBY as a means to collect intelligence on potential political enemies, which to Bothans, includes all individuals, species and governments. The Spynet consisted of thousands of spies, informants and data collection droids that fed into a centralized command structure. Together its military component, Bothan Military Intelligence, the Spynet was the most comprehensive and thorough intelligence outfit in the galaxy. Serving Bothan interests first and selling its services second, the Spynet, under the leadership of Koth Melan, proved crucial to the Rebel Alliance in providing information on Imperial military plans, commerce shipping schedules and personnel intelligence, although their services were also bought by the Empire and Fringe elements. Their usefulness culminated in the capture of plans for the second Death Star. After the Galactic Civil War, the Spynet continued to operate independently of New Republic Intelligence until the year 11 ABY. Aknar Koth'lyri, a Bothan with considerable political power on Bothawui due to his family ties, campaigned and sucessfully managed to incorporate certain sections of the Bothan Spynet with New Republic Intelligence. Subsequently Koth'lyri, with the political help of then Chief of State Peshk Vry'lya, was appointed Director of NRI. He served as director from 11 ABY-12 ABY where he took a two year leave of absence. During this time, prominent figures such as Talon Karrde and Lando Calrissian filled his post. Near the end of the year, 14 ABY Koth'lyri resumed the Directorship and Chief of the Bothan Spynet. From 14 ABY to 17 ABY, Aknar was content to allow his large network of deputies to manage and run the day-to-day operations of the Bothan Spynet. Rumblings are that, more recently, he has begun to take an active role once more.
