The Admiral Roj class represents the toughest, most heavily armed warship presently in Union Navy service, made to stand broadside to broadside against the heavy combatants of the major powers. They represent the first modern battleships of quantity to enter service with the fleet since the founding of the Union, and a controversial expense given their aggressive nature.
The Imperial War of Aggression both proved the necessity of ships of this nature and provided tremendous setbacks in getting them into service. The industrial base of the home system had suffered significant damage, and many warships under construction had suffered major damage in their construction scaffolds at the hands of marauding Imperial forces.
Unlike the Imperial and Republic ships of the line, the Admiral Roj does not attempt to be a 'do everything' ship. Despite having displacement greater than a Victory-class Star Destroyer, starfighter compliments and troop compliments are comparatively small (though still credible). They are instead optimized to kill heavy warships by direct fire. For this reason (as well as to avoid the unsavory political connotations) they are dubbed battleships rather than the more popular 'Star Destroyer'.
Current defense plans call for the Union to field upwards of sixteen battleships, most of which will be of this class. The Admiral Roj-class battleships are named after legendary heroes of the CDU and its member worlds, or are named after legendary ships of past generations. At the time of this writing, the class has not been tested in major combat. Much of their value has been in deterrence. Pirate activity tends to become quite scarce when a ship of this class shows the flag in system.
